1) Warm water with honey
Take a glass of warm water with honey soon after you wake up in the morning. Normally bowel movement happens within a hour. If the constipation is too high, one may have to repeat this every day for a week or so in order to see the changes. Even if you don't have constipation, this is a good drink to have in the morning. Some people add a spoonful of lemon juice also.
However if you are like me, and need coffee soon after waking up, you may find it difficult to follow :)
2) Psyllium husk
As the name suggests, this is the natural husk and you can find it in grocery and medical stores as Isabgol. At Amazon, I found the following brands are available:
Telephone Brand Sat-Isabgol 200G
Dabur Nature Care Regular Isabgol
Yerba Prima Psyllium Whole Husks, 12-Ounce
NOW Foods Psyllium Husks Whole, 16 Ounce
You can get Isabgol capsules also, however in my opinion, whole husk is better.
Isabgol or Psyllium husk is a natural and safe material to consume, however keep the following points in mind.
- You need to take the husk in a drink. Water may not be the best because it becomes sticky. I use curd (yogurt). Take a few spoons of curd, add water to make it a glassful and then add one or two spoons of Isabgol.
- Take the drink immediately because Isabgol expands after absorbing water.
- Isabgol husk is a natural fiber which increases volume in the intestine material making it easy to push down. Normally it takes 10-12 hours to pass through the intestines, so if you take in the night, you can expect the impact next day. By taking regularly for a few days, you can establish the new habit of daily bowel movement.
- You don't need to take regularly. You can take depending upon the need.
- Isabgol does not cause lose motions or repeated motions. It just adds fiber bulk so that the bowels are naturally moved. However, if you are taking for the first time, it is better to plan so that you are at home the next day.
I am a big fan of Isabgol. Try out and see for yourself.
Isabgol is one of the safe natural remedies for constipation in adults, however be sensible and in case of serious constipation issues, please meet a medical expert.
